Welcome by Mylee Joseph SLNSW
mjoseph@sl.nsw.gov.au.no.spam
Mylee shares some trends that the SLNSW stats are showing for our libraries:
- State wide the circulation of picture books is continuing to rise, and our picture book collections are working harder.
- Junior Fiction state circulation shows an increase of 12%, a dramatic increase is evident coinciding with the introduction f the Premiers Reading Challenge.
- Junior Non Fiction shows a drop in circulation of 13% state wide, but libraries show a 1% decrease in stock size, should public libraries be purchasing less junior non-fiction? The gathering’s consensus follows the theory that kids are seeking more information online and other digital sources.
- Young Adult Fiction has seen a 43% increase in circulation, but only an 18% increase in library stock size.
Local Government Procurement Mylee Joseph SLNSW
- Of those present, only 5% currently use LGP for their collection development.
- The successful suppliers make a rather long list, but many of the specialty or smaller suppliers are not found.
- It is thought that Library managers have gone for LGP for two main reasons. It is a requirement of the local government act that any budget of $150000+ must go to tender, and LGP has taken meet this burden. The other is that many Library Managers are interested in standardising the processing and establishing a simple minimum standard, to facilitate a reduction in costs.
How to be a good customer Gavin Shepherd Phoenix Books Suppliers

Themes that run through the presentation:
Relationships,
Knowledge,
Value adding,
Making it easy for all.
Limiting factors for librarians:
Financial constraints, Gavin predicts Non Fiction is pricing itself out of the market
Clients: vary from newborn babies to the highly literate adults, a broad and vibrant group of people whom all have a variety of demands.
Time constraints, with a broad plethora of services to provide collection development some times falls back.
It is important that dialogue is maintained to pass information on customers’ demands between the supplier and librarian. If there are issues, both parties need to be honest with each other and come to a solution that suits both. Remember there are specialist suppliers in different areas, High School Certificate materials, Premiers Reading Challenge, literacy readers, etc. The supplier with a specialty can held the librarian to access further information and is better suited to meet the niche demand.
A useful tool: www.titlepage.com 800,000 titles (Australian publishers association)
What can a librarian do to be a good partner?
In May and June, organise appointments and provide guidelines for what you’re looking for in the new financial year.
Provide the supplier with a good understanding of your process of getting items through the library management system; make it as simple and easy as possible.
Payment – for the little guys, they rely on regular payments, try not to lose invoices and make an effort to tracked down stray invoices.
Support your local book shop, they need your support and can provide a local and individualised service.
Choose your suppliers by their specialty.
